Artist Statement

I am an image maker of realism portraiture inspired by art, history, and culture. Research, study, and discovery stimulates my curiosity to imagine a face, a time period, a style, a person. Barkley Hendricks’ use of color and minimalism influence the individuality, style, and narrative of my modern contemporary artwork.

It all begins with photos and sketches, imagining skin tones, color, and design patterns. I paint with oil and acrylic, using canvas or wood. Sometimes I embellish the art with fabrics, blings, and threading.

I am motivated to create multifaceted aspects of beauty within a space for the viewer to experience a personal encounter through seeing. The invisible becoming undeniably visible where the object stares back; an interaction with color.
