When I first saw Rothko’s work, I thought it was too simple. I ran through the book in like 5 minutes. I thought he needed to add more to the canvas, do something. But I kept going back to this guy in my studies. Then I started feeling the art. I began taking it in, experiencing a well of emotion.
I am such a COLOR girl. The color people are my people; Rothko, Alma Thomas, Pollock, Mondrian, Kandinsky… and yet these artists are very different in their artist process. I must study deeper and see who I am most like. I’m really feeling Rothko the most but we will see as I evolve.
This artist journey is amazing. When I first entered grad school, I was told I had to find my artist tree, where I come from as an artist. I had no clue. It’s an awesome discovery to connect with past artists. I didn’t think I did. If you are an artist reading this, find your tribe. You come from somewhere. Read books, visit the library, see where your art connects.
